House Impeaches Mayorkas, Senate Dismisses Case
Failed House Impeachment Vote
On February 6, the House of Representatives failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by a vote of 214-216. Four House Republicans joined the Democratic Party in voting against the impeachment.
Resolution Passed for Impeachment
However, on Tuesday night, the House passed a resolution to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the Department of Homeland Security.
Senate Ends Impeachment Case
Despite the House impeachment, the US Senate voted on Wednesday to end the impeachment case against Mayorkas, effectively dismissing the charges.
Second Impeachment Attempt
This is the second time the House has attempted to impeach Mayorkas. The first attempt failed in February.
Impeachment Details
The resolution to impeach Mayorkas cited his alleged failures to secure the US-Mexico border, respond effectively to the influx of migrants, and address the fentanyl crisis.
The Senate voted 58-42 to dismiss the case, stating that the evidence presented by the House did not meet the constitutional threshold for impeachment.
