Mayorkas was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate in February 2021. He has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration's immigration policies, and he has vowed to reform the Department of Homeland Security. However, Mayorkas has also been criticized for his handling of the recent surge in illegal immigration at the southern border.
The impeachment inquiry against Mayorkas was launched in March 2022 by the House of Representatives.
