US Forms Naval Coalition to Counter Houthi Attacks in Red Sea

Operation Prosperity Guardian Aims to Protect Commercial Vessels

By Jim Garamone, DOD News

December 22, 2023 - The United States has launched Operation Prosperity Guardian, a multinational naval coalition aimed at safeguarding commercial vessels from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

The Houthi rebel group, which controls parts of Yemen, has been accused of launching missile and drone attacks on ships transiting the vital waterway. These attacks have disrupted trade and raised concerns about the safety of seafarers.

Operation Prosperity Guardian brings together multiple countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. The coalition will conduct patrols, escort vessels, and provide intelligence and surveillance to deter Houthi attacks and ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the operation in response to the recent attacks, which have demonstrated the Houthi's growing threat to regional stability.

Through Operation Prosperity Guardian, the coalition aims to protect commercial traffic and maintain the free flow of goods and resources through the strategic waterway.

The establishment of the naval coalition reflects the international community's determination to combat piracy and protect the safety of seafarers in the Red Sea.
