Ohio: The Non-Rectangular Flag

A Unique Symbol of the Buckeye State

Ohio's Distinctive Design

Amidst a sea of rectangular flags that adorn the nation, Ohio stands out with its distinctive swallowtail-shaped banner. This unique design sets the Buckeye State's flag apart, making it a symbol of both pride and individuality.

According to vexillologist Whitney Smith, Ohio's flag is a rare example of a non-rectangular civil flag. Its shape, derived from the swallow-tailed naval burgees once used by American privateers, adds an element of maritime tradition to the state's symbolism.

The flag's striking design features red and white stripes and a blue hoist triangle. Emblazoned upon the blue triangle is a white-bordered red disk containing 17 white stars, representing Ohio's position as the 17th state to join the Union.
