Earthquake Rocks Southern California

Moderate 5.2-Magnitude Quake Felt Widely

Over 30 Aftershocks Reported

A moderately strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 struck Southern California on Tuesday evening, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at 9:09 p.m. local time and was centered near Bakersfield, approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles.

The earthquake was felt over a wide area, including Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Ventura counties. There have been at least 38 reported aftershocks following the main quake, with the largest measuring 3.6 magnitude.

There have been no reports of any major damage or injuries, but authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and be prepared for potential aftershocks. The USGS has issued a yellow alert for the area, indicating that there is a moderate risk of additional earthquakes in the coming days.

California is located on a major fault line and has a history of destructive earthquakes. In 1906, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck San Francisco, killing an estimated 3,000 people. In 1994, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Northridge caused widespread damage and killed 57 people.

Residents in earthquake-prone areas are encouraged to take steps to prepare for future events, including having an emergency plan, assembling a supply kit, and securing their homes.
