FC Bayern Munich suffer shock defeat to Villarreal in Champions League

Bundesliga giants stunned by Spanish underdogs in quarter-final first leg

Villarreal take control of tie ahead of second leg at the Allianz Arena

FC Bayern Munich suffered a shock defeat to Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.

The Bundesliga giants were stunned by the Spanish underdogs, who took a surprise lead through Arnaut Danjuma in the eighth minute.

Bayern Munich equalised through Robert Lewandowski just before the half-hour mark, but Villarreal regained the lead through Francis Coquelin just after half-time.

Bayern Munich pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but Villarreal held on to secure a famous victory.

The result leaves Villarreal in a strong position ahead of the second leg at the Allianz Arena on April 12.

Bayern Munich will need to score at least twice without conceding in order to progress to the semi-finals.

The defeat is a major blow to Bayern Munich's hopes of winning the Champions League for the seventh time.

It is also the first time that Bayern Munich have lost a Champions League match at home since 2017.

Villarreal, meanwhile, will be full of confidence ahead of the second leg.

The Spanish side have now won their last three Champions League matches and are unbeaten in their last five.

They will be hoping to cause another upset when they travel to Munich next month.
